With a few hot days behind us and more to come it’s really important to maintain the work you did in the spring.
It doesn’t matter if you planted in the ground or in pots (or both) watering is critical in the getting plants to thrive. Watering slow and deep is what we recommend. Proven Winners wrote a piece that explains how to tackle watering well (the link is at the bottom). You will also need to add fertilizer to the mix too. You have a few options here; water soluble, granular, slow release, chemical or organic. All have their benefits and work well when used properly. When you pick out your fertilizer, read the package to see how often you will need to use it and how to mix it. Make sure that it is something that you can commit to using. For best results you need to stay on the schedule for a proper feeding.
After you have picked out your fertilizer and got a handle on the watering and your plants are growing rapidly, you’ll need to cut back the plants to keep them nice and full. In most cases if you cut off the dead flowers they will re bloom faster. If they start to fall open or thin out in the middle then you can cut a few inches (more if the plant is rather large) off the ends and they will fill back in. if you are uncertain how much you can cut off give us a call and we’ll help you determine how much.
By watering and fertilizing regularly and cutting a little off here and there your plants will look great all summer long and into the fall.
